Tell the Bees

A Tradition of Remembrance in the Beekeeping World

In beekeeping tradition, when a beekeeper passes away, someone visits the hives to “tell the bees.” This ritual invites the bees into mourning and acknowledges the enduring bond between human and hive. Folklore holds that if the bees are not informed, they may abandon the hive or fall into sorrow.

Here, we honor that tradition in spirit. This page remembers the beekeepers we have lost, preserving their stories so the community they helped nurture may continue to thrive.

If you have memories, photos, or reflections you’d like to contribute in honor of a COBKA member that you would like assistance adding, please reach out to us.
